Why is it important to understand typical development?
- Understanding typical development allows us to recognise atypical development and determine whether development is immature, interrupted or atypical/disordered.
- Understanding typical development provides us with an awareness of the variety within typical development. Variety occurs as a result of the influence of many factors including genetic, biomechanics (e.g. body proportions and muscle tone), motivation and personality, family structure, health, experience and parental engagement.
- Understanding typical development allows us to develop plans in conjunction with family goals. This allows us to provide targeted intervention to at the right and relevant time for the infant.
