Why is it important to understand typical development?

  1. Understanding typical development allows us to recognise atypical development and determine whether development is immature, interrupted or atypical/disordered.
  1. Understanding typical development provides us with an awareness of the variety within typical development. Variety occurs as a result of the influence of many factors including genetic, biomechanics (e.g. body proportions and muscle tone), motivation and personality, family structure, health, experience and parental engagement.
  1. Understanding typical development allows us to develop plans in conjunction with family goals. This allows us to provide targeted intervention to at the right and relevant time for the infant.
