The aim of intervention
The main objectives of Occupational Therapy intervention to promote play are:
- assess the infant's readiness for play
- support play mastery: development of the infant's feelings of success and drive to explore. This can be achieved through positioning, toy choice and ensuring adequate timing of interaction
- promote functional motor and cognitive skills required for play (including maintenance of physical structures)
- guide play development through toy selection targeted at the child’s skill and motivation.
- progress the infants play development through education and demonstration to the family
- empower the family to see the importance and value of play and how to use play in the home environment.
