Bimanual play

Two handed play begins with hands at midline and progresses through transferring of the toy hand to hand and to role-differentiated bimanual play (where the two hands perform separate functions)

  • Two handed play can be encouraged through interactive play and games such as clapping hands and exploring the caregiver’s face
  • Bimanual and constraint therapies may also provide treatment opportunities to  improve bimanual function (see section on bimanual and constraint therapies)
  • Carefully chosen toys can provoke two handed play
  • Provide good seating or support for infants with postural challenges in order to explore best performance in two handed play. The infant will find working on posture and manipulative abilities simultaneously too much of a challenge

In the first video the baby is exploring a silicone zip tie using one hand to stabilise and one hand to manipulate.

For babies who have not achieved independent sitting, try supporting them in different ways to successfully use two hands as demonstrated in the video below.
