Variability in sensitivity
Responses are never static and are dependent on factors such as:
- the baby’s expectations
- arousal level
- activity level
- perceived importance (drives such as hunger, interest in the activity will change response)
- environment (availability of caregiver to co-regulate)
- previous experience and familiarity
- physiological stability (e.g. unstable medical condition)
These variables provide opportunities to scaffold the infant’s best performance.
