Infant behavioural states
The infant moves through various states from waking to sleep. Brazelton described six states of arousal, pictured below.

The infant is most available for interaction and learning in the quiet alert state where there is minimal motor activity and invested focus. This is the ideal state for interaction and therapy interventions
