The aim of intervention
The goals of intervention around self-regulation include:
- Helping parents develop awareness and confidence in their abilities to read cues and support the infant’s regulatory needs.
- Supporting the infant to achieve a quiet alert state for interaction and play.
- Supporting the infant to achieve appropriate state and transitions between states for occupations such as sleeping and feeding.
The 6 month old baby (right) indicated she was overstimulated by turning her head away from the therapist and calming herself through thumb sucking. After a brief time-out she turned back to midline, removed her thumb and re-engaged. 'Tuning out' and looking away allowed the baby to regulate her own state.
