Interpretation of findings

Once you have completed your assessment you will be able to start painting a clinical picture of the child's occupational performance.

Assigning a developmental age is often the least important part of your assessment and may even be counterproductive to the therapeutic relationship you have with the child and family.

Key Point

Your interpretation of the assessment of the infant should take into account both the original question but also the infant’s engagement in occupational roles (e.g. sleeping, feeding, play).

Interpretation should highlight both the strengths and capacities of the infant along with areas of difficulty by considering:

  • formal assessment findings
  • observations
  • interview findings.
