Indicators for scar massage

Massage is commonly used after a burn injury and involves the manipulation of skin and underlying tissues through the application of varying levels of hand pressure [4].  Massage is thought to assist with disrupting fibrotic tissue and the realignment of collagen fibres [2]; in combination with improving venous and lymphatic drainage in scar tissue [3]. There is some evidence that scar massage decreases pain and itch related to burn scarring [6]. Findings from one study suggest anxiety and depression may also be reduced[7].
