Assessment of the burn
Burns are assessed and classified according to:
- Mechanism of Burn
- Depth of burn and tissue damage to underlying skin or body structures
- Percentage of the total body surface area (TBSA) affected
Key Point
The larger the total body surface area of a burn and the deeper a burn, the greater the body’s physiological response to the burn injury. Large and deep burns require the child to receive specialist medical intervention in a designated burns unit.
