Indicators for splinting and positioning

Splinting is indicated if the burn is:

  • Location: over the flexor surface of a joint (including circumferential burn) AND
  • Depth: Deep partial thickness to full thickness burn depth
  • Depth: full thickness depth with exposed structures (ie tendons, fracture) requiring strict immobilisation
  • Child is not maintaining full active range of motion or holding in protective flexed position
  • After skin grafting over joints to assist with graft immobilisation
  • After a contracture/scar release to joints to maintain a new position gained/support surgical intervention.
