Oedema management: activity participation/mobilisation

Topic Progress:

Activity participation/mobilisation is one way that oedema can be managed. See below for the regime, how to implement this intervention and an indication of when this treatment is not suitable.

How:

  • Encouraging movement and muscle pump activity to assist the lymphatic and vascular system pump excess fluid back into peripheral circulation.
  • Consider what activities/games will motivate and encourage the child to move the desired joint.
  • Discuss with physiotherapist as required
  • Formulate play regime to build this activity into daily routine.
  • Can be used in conjunction with compression bandaging/splinting/elevation.

Regime:

  • Commence from time of burn injury
  • Timing will depend on depth of burn and quality of movement achieved by child
  • Incorporate into meaningful daily tasks - feeding, eating, play, sleep positions.

Check for any movement precautions from medical team prior to intervention.
For example - movement may not be suitable immediately after grafting due to immobilisation required.
