Debriefing
Debriefing is a purposeful conversation that is used as a facilitation tool. It is used to discuss individual and team performance, identify issues or errors, identify ways to address the issue or area, and identify opportunities for improvement. It is an integral part of simulation programs and has been found to significantly improve learning and shared understanding.
A debrief should focus on the desired outcomes of the event, as well as allowing flexibility to address the participants’ needs.

Ground rules
Early establishment of the ground rules of behaviour during a debrief, both for participants and facilitators, is essential for creating a safe learning environment. The ground rules should cover confidentiality, privacy, fiction contract, safety container, appropriate feedback, and the aim of the debrief.
Accompany the group to the debrief area
We recommend the facilitator/debriefer accompanies the participants from the scenario room to the debrief room. This will ensure that any early venting of thoughts and feelings from participants is captured.
