Reflexive simulation
Reflexive simulation attempts to eliminate the 'gap' that exists in traditional simulation by capturing 'work as done'.
Combining a range of simulation techniques and quality improvement tools, reflexive simulation employs a safety II approach to systems and safety improvement. Reflexive simulation acknowledges that healthcare is a complex adaptive system and seeks to create solutions that benefit an entire socio-technical system.
A Reflexive Simulation exercise could contain the following phases
Sensemaking exercises to create a shared understanding of work as it is truly done and identify potential areas of improvement. Co-design workshops involving relevant stakeholders develop simulation events to test potential improvements. Rapid Cycle testing of improvements are debriefed by skilled facilitators to determine if the improvements are implemented into the workplace. Education simulation events are designed, developed and delivered to help educate and support staff during and after implementation.
