Module 4: Evoking – Open questions

Open questions

Open questions are designed to get people talking, and in MI they are great at helping you get to the heart of what a woman is thinking. Using a variety of open questions early in the motivational interview to get more information is a great strategy, however when it comes to evoking change talk, there are questions that can be more effective than others.

Watch Dr Steindl introduce his recommended questions designed to evoke change talk.

Using these questions when evoking change talk can be extremely empowering for the woman as she has the opportunity to give her own reasons, rather than receiving suggestions from a practitioner.

Role play - Evoking desire change talk

While you watch, see if you can pick up on the different types of change talk the practitioner evokes from Sarah.

As you probably noticed, while asking questions to evoke desire change talk, the practitioner also was able to evoke need change talk. Recognising the different types of change talk a woman uses will help you give it back to her in the form of reflections.
