Module 4: Evoking – Evoking

Evoking

While it may seem that evoking requires the practitioner to assert their control over the conversation to get the correct response out of the woman, in reality it actually involves a great deal of careful listening.

Watch Dr Steindl discuss evoking and its use in MI.

Listening carefully to the woman will make it easier to recognise when she is speaking about change, and your encouragement will evoke more conversation on the topic of change. And when you summarise her change talk, what you’re really doing is repeating back her great ideas and reinforcing her intrinsic motivations for change.

You may be wondering, ‘How will I recognise change talk when I hear it?’ Next, let’s examine what change talk is and the types of change that you'll want to encourage.
