Module 4: Evoking – Sustain talk

Sustain talk

Sustain talk is used to describe a woman's arguments against change. These arguments tend to take the same form as the arguments for change (desire, ability, reasons, need) and are just as important for you to notice as change talk.

Watch Dr Steindl go through some examples of sustain talk and tips for what to do when you hear it.

Accepting and validating sustain talk may seem counterintuitive but remember that acceptance and compassion are both part of the MI Spirit. Being empathetic will also help you build a partnership with the woman, which you’ll recognise as yet another part of the MI Spirit.

Accepting and validating sustain talk

While you watch, notice how the health practitioner listens carefully to Sarah’s challenges with checking her blood sugar and how he reacts.

Behaviour change can be difficult for anyone and by acknowledging and accepting a woman's challenges, you create an environment filled with empathy and trust where it’s easier to discuss difficult topics.
