Module 4: Evoking – Affirmations

Affirmations

Affirmations are used closely alongside reflections to highlight a woman's strengths, positive qualities and attributes or achievements. However, there is a risk of overusing affirmations and, as a result, they lose their effectiveness.

Watch Dr Steindl explain the delicate balance needed when using affirmations.

As Dr Steindl mentioned, affirmations attached to specific patient situations or behaviours are going to be the most effective as they will reinforce the positive aspects of the patient.

Role play – Evoking need change talk

While you watch, try to recognise what the practitioner affirms that is specific to Sarah and her situation.

The practitioner used a complex reflection to lead into an affirmation of Sarah’s strong sense of family and how that will translate to her being a good mother. Remember how we said earlier that affirmations are closely tied to reflections? This is a great example of how these two core skills can combine to keep the conversation moving towards a commitment to change.
