Module 4: Evoking – Reflections
Reflections
Health practitioners can use reflections during a motivational interview to help keep the conversation going, even gently guiding the woman towards revealing more about their motivation for change. There are a few types of reflections that can be useful in MI:
- Simple
- Complex
- Amplified
- Double-sided
Watch Dr Steindl discuss these types of reflections in more detail.
Isn’t it interesting that strategically ordering reflections on sustain talk first and change talk second can influence what the woman elaborates on? Let’s see how the health practitioner uses reflections in the next clip.
Role play - Evoking reasons change talk
While you watch, take note of the complex reflections the practitioner used and how they build on what Sarah said.
Reflections are a powerful tool that recognise and enhance the woman's ideas regarding change. The more the woman hears and uses change talk, the more likely she is to follow through and make that change.
