Direct

Direct questioning is aimed at one learner to assess their understanding. Learners should be allowed to 'pass' if they do not know the answer so they do not feel uncomfortable.

Indirect

These are aimed at the entire group to promote discussion, assess understanding as a group or to gain involvement in the topic at hand. It can be common that no one will respond, so the question may then be used directly to stimulate a response.

Closed

Closed questions only allow for a 'yes', 'no' or factual response. These questions do not encourage discussion but can reinforce facts and check progress.

Open

Open-ended questioning may not provide an opportunity for participants to give a clear answer, and will require extra thought and time for discussion. Open questions will have a number of answers that may be correct and promote discussion on varying solutions and ideas.
