Safety container

It is important when using interactive approaches during sensemaking exercises that the facilitator creates an environment where staff feel safe asking questions and contributing to discussions. Demonstrating mutual respect and creating rapport with participants is a critical element in establishing this safe environment.  Simulation exercises that are designed to explore systems may have the collateral effect of exposing staff to the scrutiny of their peers.

In Systems and Safety Improvement we need to consider the staffs physiological safety.   Establishing a psychologically safe context includes, clarifying expectations, establishing a "fiction contract", attending to logistic details, and declaring and enacting a commitment to respecting learners concerns.

Creating a safe learning environment:

  • Organise the physical space of your room for movement and interaction.
  • Arrange chairs in a tight circle formation to encourage sharing and safety.
  • Ensure the space  is clean, orderly, and inviting.

Psychological safety:

  • Creation of a fiction contract .
  • No matter what a participant says, respond with respect.
  • Establishing rapport with participants will help to build trust.
  • Always ask questions in an inquisitive manner.
