Operating Theatre Protocol (OTP)
Welcome, this is a blended course, which consists of an eLearning and a face-to-face module. The eLearning is a pre-requisite for the face-to-face module and must be completed as it prepares you for the practical face-to-face component.
The perioperative environment is quite different from other clinical departments. This course will give you an overview of how to prepare yourself for, and conduct yourself in, the perioperative environment.
The Australian College of Operating Nurses (ACORN) has produced a set of standards that outlines the accepted standard of professional practice in Australia. This course is based on these standards, and you are encouraged to read these for more information.
The module assessment is a quiz, which must be successfully passed in order to complete the module.

Before starting, ensure you have a set of headphones plugged in and have the volume set to a comfortable level.
Learning objectives
This course aims to:
- familiarise the learner with the perioperative environment
- describe safe functioning within the perioperative environment.
Learning outcomes
Following completion of this course the learner will be able to:
- demonstrate compliance with ACORN standards in relation to
- scrubbing
- gloving
- gowning
- managing sterile fields
- maintain a safe perioperative environment, including identifying breaches to safe practice
- demonstrate and adhere to the principles of theatre etiquette.
