Learning objective

This course aims to provide participants with knowledge around what occupational violence is and how it can be responded to and managed.

Learning outcomes

Following completion of this course, the participant should be able to recall

  • identify the concepts of workplace aggression, verbal aggression and bullying
  • identify situations within health care with an increased risk of aggression
  • link workplace aggression with particular health care scenarios
  • describe factors that predict aggressive behaviours
  • identify the expected effects of fear (sympathetic nervous system activation) in an aggressive or violent situation
  • describe strategies for controlling their own response to fear
  • identify response options using the intervention model
  • describe strategies for dealing with aggression.
  • demonstrate the knowledge and application of the OHS risk assessment process
  • identify appropriate control measures using the hierarchy of controls.
