Module 4: Introduction to MI – The four tasks of MI

The four tasks of MI

Internalising and embodying the MI Spirit will help you create an atmosphere where the woman feels listened to and supported. This is crucial for helping you accomplish the tasks of motivational interviewing.

Motivational interviewing involves four fundamental tasks:

  • Engaging
  • Focusing
  • Evoking
  • Planning

Watch Dr Steindl explain each of these tasks and how they are undertaken in a motivational interview.

Motivational Interviewing can go hand in hand with clinical yarning. A social yarn can be used to build rapport, engage the woman, and pave the way for a management yarn around focusing, evoking and planning for change.

We are going to look at each of these tasks in more detail by watching some clips of a role play of a motivational interview. But, before we do, let’s look at some basic interviewing skills that you’ll see used to great effect during the videos.
