Module 4: Engaging and focusing – Focusing

Focusing

Focusing

Once you’ve started to form a partnership with the woman and they’re engaged in the interview, you’ll be looking to focus the conversation on a behaviour change topic.

Watch Dr Steindl highlight the important considerations for focusing the conversation.

As Dr Steindl highlighted in the previous clip, the patient should choose the behaviour to focus on. This ensures the principles of partnership and empowerment are maintained during the focusing task of MI. Next, let’s watch an example of the focusing task as the role play continues in the next video.

Role play - Focusing

While you watch, notice how the health practitioner elicits multiple potential behaviours for discussion from Sarah, accepting and responding to her challenges with compassion.

The practitioner continued to empower Sarah through affirmations of her knowledge of her situation and recommendations from other practitioners. Giving women that sense of empowerment should make it easier for them to take that first step towards change by choosing a behaviour to focus on.
