This morning you are looking after Mr. Edward Smith. He presented to Emergency Department an hour ago with a self-inflicted laceration to his foot. He tells you it was an accident with a shovel while gardening. Mr. Smith requires surgery and has been put on the emergency list for theatres. He is otherwise well. You have been asked by the attending doctor to cannulate him for fluids and antibiotics.
