A risk assessment seeks to answer four questions:

How badly can it go wrong?

Is there a need for action to be taken?

If yes was the answer to question 3, how often do we have to take action? 1

When undertaking a risk assessment it is also important to know the difference between a hazard and a risk.

Hazard

A hazard is a situation that has the potential to cause harm.

Risk

A risk refers to the probability that a specific adverse event will happen in a specified time period or as the result of a specific action/situation. A risk is the combination of the likelihood and the consequence of an identified hazard being realised.1
