On the day of the event

Topic Progress:

Lead facilitators, Simulation Coordinators, and role players need to constantly observe and monitor the progress of participants. Facilitators will often need to provide extra support or add complexities to the scenario due to the wide range of skills, experience, and knowledge offered by participants. Simulation education events should be carefully planned, but there may be deviation from the plan at the discretion of the lead facilitator to support the participants.

  1. Continuing to actively manage time and stay on track.
  2. Anticipating the next activity and ensuring preparation and setting up occurs.
  3. Ensuring refreshment breaks occur.
  4. For each learning activity, ensuring participants are briefed, including their roles and expectations for the activity.
  5. Ensuring that occupational health and safety issues are continually monitored and managed.
  6. Facilitating the learning during the activity, specifically for simulation events:
    • Assigning roles for participants.
    • Ensuring that all elements in the simulation room are ready to run the activity.
    • Assigning roles within the control room.
    • Commencing the simulation event.
    • Ensuring that simulation scripts are followed with any deviations based on emerging need.
    • Closing the simulation activity.
    • Getting participants ready for debriefing.
    • Diffusing tension within the activity.
  7. Continuing to observe participants as they change through the course, including monitoring of group dynamics.
  8. Ensuring effective debriefing occurs.

Assessment

Assessment information should be gathered throughout the event in accordance with the event documentation. Using all tools and frameworks developed or supplied with the event is important to allow for meaningful evaluation and feedback on the success of the training.

All faculty should have a clear understanding of the assessment tools prior to delivery to ensure everyone involved is aware of the skills being assessed.
