Feedback, Assessment and Debriefing
Assessment is used in simulation education to enhance participants’ learning.
For this to be effective, participants must receive timely feedback on their performance.
Selecting assessment and feedback methods should be determined by the purpose and objectives of the course. Summative and formative assessment may be used for the following purposes:
Summative Assessment
- Summarises the development of the learner at a particular time,
- Verifies achievement,
- Makes judgements regarding effectiveness of teaching (outcomes), and
- Satisfies credentialing requirements.
Formative Assessment
- Identifies areas for improvement in teaching and training, and
- Allows specific suggestions for improvement (individual, institutional, and curriculum).
Common forms of assessment used in simulation education include:
- Multiple-choice questions (MCQs),
- Short response (short essay),
- Objective structured clinical exam (OSCE), and
- Observational assessment.
Debriefing is used to generate discussion on the skills, knowledge, and behaviours learnt throughout the course. Ensure there is a predetermined structure with clear links to the learning objectives for debriefing activities.
