Development

The next step is to develop the required learning resources.

Whether you’re developing pre-reading, eLearning or scenario scripts, you’ll need

  • learning objectives and outcomes
  • a clear outline of the content that is to be included, and
  • an outline of the learning sequence and timeline.

Any resources you decide to use should have a clear link between the knowledge, skills and attitudes required and how these relate to the workplace.

There are few things to consider when developing resources -

  • Pre-reading should directly relate to the simulation event, address the learning objectives and be succinct. Content is generally sourced from textbooks, journals and research papers.
  • eLearning should allow participants to access the package prior to arriving at the simulation event. This requires the material to be available on a learning management system that ideally enables the facilitator to monitor which participants have completed the eLearning package.
  • Workbooks can be used as pre-reading tools or to provide additional information that is summarised in a presentation delivered during the event. Workbooks need to be structured so that participants can follow the logical construction of knowledge.
  • Lectures and facilitated discussions should be used to highlight the relevant skills, whether they are technical and non-technical, that will be rehearsed during the simulation event.
  • Didactic lectures should be avoided unless the presentation is short and is used demonstrate a clinical procedure.
