Welcome to the Recognising and Responding to Clinical Deterioration Course

The primary aim of this course is to provide clinicians with the knowledge and skills in recognising, responding and managing an adult deteriorating patient.  This eLearning module covers the theoretical components while the face-to-face module provides participants with the opportunity to practices these skills.

Topics covered within this course includes:

  • Understanding the importance and utilising a systematic approach of the Primary Survey to determine the seriousness of a condition and to prioritise initial clinical interventions.
  • Using an Adult Deterioration Detection System (ADDS) chart and escalating patient care accordingly.
  • An introduction to a cognitive process in which clinicians may use to assist them in the application of the clinical reasoning cycle.
  • Understanding the importance and utilising a structured approach when performing a clinical handover.

All of these topics are important to implement when dealing with a deteriorating patient.

Structure

The course structure is as follows:

  • Module 1 – Primary Survey
  • Module 2 - Adult Deterioration Detection System (ADDS) chart and escalation of care
  • Module 3 – Clinical Reasoning
  • Module 4 – Clinical Handover

Assessment

  • Every module includes an assessment.
  • These module assessments are multiple choice quizzes, and in order to complete any particular module, you must pass the quiz by getting all answers correct (100% pass rate).
  • To complete the course itself and receive recognition of this, you must complete all modules, successfully complete all module assessments and attend the face-to-face component of the course.

Learning objectives 

This course aims to:

  • provide knowledge and understanding in recognising, responding and managing a deteriorating adult
  • outline a systematic approach using primary survey for assessment and managment of a deterioration patient
  • introduce the early warning and response system tool
  • describe the process of initiating a medical emergency response.

Learning outcomes

Following completion of this course the learner will be able to:

  • accurately assess patients and interpret signs and symptoms of clinical deterioration
  • recognise the urgency of a situation
  • communicate to escalate care effectively
  • provide immediate interventions while awaiting expert help.
