old Cognitive biases

Are these orange lines the same length?

First impressions can be deceptive. Did you always see the lines as being the same length or did some initially appear longer?  This is a very basic example of a cognitive bias affecting information processing. When you consider how many decisions are made every day in the healthcare setting, it is easy to see how error may arise.

Learning objective

To understand the origins of cognitive bias and the impact it can have on the decision making process.

Learning outcomes

Following completion of this course the learner should be able to:

  • recognise different types of cognitive bias and how they may impact decision making in the healthcare setting.
  • identify ways to mitigate the impact of cognitive bias and apply analytical processes to decision making.
