Trauma – Acute Compartment Syndrome
Welcome to the online learning course: Trauma–Acute Compartment Syndrome (T-ACS)
This course aims to provide healthcare workers with a basic knowledge of acute limb compartment syndrome epidemiology, pathophysiology and aetiology. It also aims to improve their confidence and ability to recognise, escalate and refer patients for time-critical surgical management.
Learning objectives
- Discuss the epidemiology and effect of acute limb compartment syndrome for Queenslanders.
- Heighten clinician index of suspicion and therefore recognition of acute limb compartment syndrome to facilitate early escalation and referral.
- Improve the recognition of time criticality of surgical intervention in potential/confirmed acute limb compartment syndrome presentations.
Learning outcomes
In relation to acute limb compartment syndrome, on completion of this course the learner should be able to:
- Recognise contemporary socioeconomic and healthcare impact on Queenslanders
- Understand and identify the relevant physiology and pathophysiology
- Identify aetiology and evaluate the risk of developing compartment syndrome based on comorbidities and patient demographics
- Assess and recognise early signs and symptoms
- Initiate early referral and interim management whilst awaiting surgical intervention
- Understand the impact of early surgical intervention and associated post-operative complications on patient recovery.
This course will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
