Tips and tricks

Tips or tricks for removal of moulage:

  • never place pen on manikin skin; you will never get it off
  • always test new products prior to placing on simulators skin
  • citrus based cleaners to clean
  • de-solve-it (natural citrus) removes sticky residue
  • the longer its applied the harder it is to get off
  • less is more

Barriers

Barriers may be used to decrease damage to the manikin’s skin from the moulage. These include two types:

  • hard barriers, examples include, plastic wrap, wax paper, aluminum foil, tegaderms, or clear tape
  • soft barriers, examples include, petroleum jelly, cold cream or baby oil.

Things to consider:

  • the physiology behind what is going on – such as age of the wound, what environment did the wound occur, is the wound infected, do the bones really bend that way
  • proper position and placement of wound
  • should be applied to enhance learning not to distract from case
  • moulage can range from low to high fidelity
  • most moulage represents a point in time and is not sensitive to disease progression or resolution

If you are able to convince your mind you are somewhere, your body reacts as though you are there.
